Is October 23 Libra or Scorpio?

October 22 starts Scorpio in Universal Time only in leap years since 2016, and only 4 times between 1930 and 2029: 2016, 2020, 2024 and 2028. The 23rd is the usual switch day, in 78 of those 100 years in UTC and 80 on New York time. Sydney and Auckland run ahead, so there it came on the 24th in 56 and 66 years. A birthday on the 23rd is Libra before the exact minute and Scorpio after it. In 18 years, all from 1930 to 1979, the UTC switch fell on the 24th, leaving the 23rd to Libra.

A West Coast birthday on the evening of October 22 can already be Scorpio. In 2025 the Sun reached the sign on the 23rd in UTC, yet Los Angeles clocks read 8:51 PM on the 22nd. A baby born there at 10 PM is a Scorpio, though printed tables file that date under Libra. The year-by-year grid on this page shows each switch on your own clock, to the minute.

October Libras sit in the Saturn and Jupiter decans

Saturn and Jupiter, the slowest planets of the old sky, rule nearly all of the Libra days in October. Only October 1, 2 and often part of the 3rd fall in the Moon’s decan, the Two of Swords. From about October 3 to 12 the Saturn decan runs, with the Three of Swords, which the Golden Dawn called the Lord of Sorrow. From about October 13 to 22 Jupiter takes over with the Four of Swords, the Lord of Rest from Strife.

The Three of Swords shows a heart pierced by three blades, and tradition reads the Saturn decan as a Libra who names a hard truth rather than papering over it. Fairness here has weight behind it. Jupiter softens the picture from about October 13. Its Four of Swords shows a knight lying at rest, the mark of a peacemaker who knows when to let an argument settle.

Justice is Libra’s major arcana card, and she holds a sword beside her scales. Air is the element of the Swords suit, which is why all three Libra decan cards are Swords. The sign is cardinal and ruled by Venus, so partners and friends sit at the center of it. See how the Scales pair with each sign.

Scorpio arrives in its double-Mars decan

Mars rules every October Scorpio birthday twice over. The first decan of the sign, about October 23 to November 1, belongs to Mars, and Mars is also the traditional ruler of the whole sign. Its card is the Five of Cups, which the Golden Dawn named the Lord of Loss in Pleasure.

The Five of Cups shows a cloaked figure mourning three spilled cups while two upright ones stand behind. Tradition reads a late-October Scorpio through that picture, with deep feelings, a long memory for hurt and the strength to turn toward what remains. Mars adds push, so this decan is read as quicker to act than to brood.

Pluto is the modern ruler of Scorpio, added long after the old books gave the sign to Mars. As fixed water, the sign holds its course and senses a mood before anyone names it. Loyalty runs deep here, and it shapes Scorpio’s matches with the other signs.

Halloween birthdays and the Death card

Halloween birthdays all belong to Scorpio and to its Mars decan, the one tied to the Five of Cups. The sign’s major arcana card in the Golden Dawn system is Death, a neat match for a birthday spent among skeletons and jack-o’-lanterns. Tarot readers rarely take the Death card literally. They read it as an ending that clears room for what comes next, like a season turning over.

Samhain, a Gaelic festival that helped shape Halloween, marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Its celebrations began on the evening of October 31, because the Celtic day began at sunset. The name Halloween comes from All Hallows’ Eve, the night before All Saints’ Day, and historians still debate how much of the holiday is Gaelic and how much Christian. An October 31 birthday sits on that old seasonal hinge, which suits a sign tradition links with endings and new starts.

Questions people ask

What zodiac sign is October 22?

October 22 is a Libra birthday in most years. On New York time the Sun reaches Scorpio on the 22nd in 12 of the 100 years from 1930 to 2029, all of them in 1992 or later. On Los Angeles time it happened in 20 years. In those years, a birth after the exact moment is a Scorpio.

What does it mean to be born in October?

Being born in October gives you an air sign or a water sign. Libra, an air sign, covers the month up to about October 22, and Scorpio, a water sign, takes over from about the 23rd. Tradition treats air as the element of thought and talk, and water as the element of feeling. Your Moon and rising sign fill in the rest.

What is the birthstone for October?

October has two birthstones on the American Gem Society list, opal and tourmaline. Its birth flowers are the marigold and the cosmos. Birthstones follow the calendar month rather than the zodiac, so a Libra born on October 4 and a Scorpio born on the 29th share the same stones.

Is everyone born on Halloween a Scorpio?

Yes, an October 31 birthday is Scorpio in every year and every time zone. The Sun enters Scorpio between October 22 and 24, depending on the year and the place, and stays in the sign until late November. Halloween always lands about a week inside it, in the decan of Mars.
