Is June 21 Gemini or Cancer?

The 2026 June solstice, the moment the Sun entered Cancer, came at 8:25 AM UTC on June 21. In Universal Time, the 21st is the switch day in 77 of the 100 years from 1930 to 2029. The 22nd takes 17 years and the 20th takes 6. New York clocks give the 21st in 79 years, so on US clocks a June 21 birthday is Cancer only a little more often than not, and the exact minute decides it in most years. In Sydney and Auckland it is mostly Gemini.

Time zones pull the switch back a date across the Americas when the solstice lands in the first hours of the UTC day. In 2025 the Sun entered Cancer at 10:42 PM on June 20 by New York clocks, when UTC had already reached the 21st. A New Yorker born at 11 PM that night is a Cancer with a June 20 birthday. The year grid after this section shows every switch on your own clock, to the minute.

Late Gemini and the Nine and Ten of Swords

Gemini holds June 1 to about June 20, the last two of its three decans. The Golden Dawn gave each ten-day decan a planet and a tarot card. From about June 1 to 10 the decan is Mars in Gemini, pictured by the Nine of Swords. From about June 11 to 20 it is the Sun in Gemini, with the Ten of Swords. A late-May birthday gets Jupiter and the Eight of Swords instead.

Mars puts an edge on the quick, Mercury-ruled talk of the Twins. Tradition reads an early-June Gemini as a fast debater who can argue either side. The Nine of Swords, Lord of Despair and Cruelty, shows a figure sitting up in bed under nine blades. For this decan it stands for a mind that keeps working after dark, and for the relief of saying a worry out loud.

The Sun decan, June 11 to 20, closes both the sign and the northern spring. The Ten of Swords, Lord of Ruin, looks grim, yet the sky behind its fallen figure turns yellow at the horizon. The card describes someone who ends a chapter fully and moves on. Plans change fast in this mutable air sign, and Gemini compatibility with each sign maps which partners keep up.

Cancer’s Venus decan and the Two of Cups

Every June Cancer belongs to the first decan of the sign, which runs from the solstice to about July 1. The Golden Dawn gave these days to Venus in Cancer and the Two of Cups, titled Lord of Love. The card shows two people raising cups to each other under a winged lion’s head. Most July birthdays get Mercury or the Moon as decan ruler, so late June is where Venus colors the Crab.

Venus in a water sign softens the guarded shell of the Crab. Tradition reads this decan as the most openly warm part of the sign, a person who bonds by hosting, feeding friends and remembering small details. The Moon rules the whole sign, and astrologers read a cardinal sign as one that likes to start things, often a home or a family custom. The Chariot, the major card of Cancer, puts crescent moons on its driver’s shoulders.

Partnership is the theme of the Two of Cups, a meeting of equals rather than a rescue. Tradition says a June Cancer’s first question in love is whether the other person is safe to let in. See how Cancer gets on with other signs for the pairs tradition rates highest and the ones that ask for patience.

Why the Tropic of Cancer carries the Crab’s name

The June solstice and the start of Cancer are one and the same moment. At that minute the Sun stands straight over the Tropic of Cancer, about 23.4 degrees north of the equator. The United States and Canada get their longest day. Australia and New Zealand get their shortest, and by Auckland clocks it comes on June 22 in 62 of the 100 years from 1930 to 2029. The word solstice joins the Latin sol, sun, and sistere, to stand still.

The Tropic of Cancer was named in the last centuries BC, when the solstice Sun stood in front of the constellation Cancer. Precession, a slow turning of the axis of the Earth, has been moving that point ever since. In 1990 the solstice Sun crossed from the constellation Gemini into Taurus, where it sits today. Western astrology ties its signs to the seasons rather than the stars, so the sign Cancer still opens at the solstice.

Questions people ask

What zodiac sign is June 20?

June 20 is Gemini in most years. On New York time the Sun reaches Cancer on the 20th in 14 of the 100 years from 1930 to 2029, starting in 1988. Los Angeles time gives 21 such years. In those years a birth after the exact moment makes you a Cancer.

What are the June birthstones and birth flowers?

June has three birthstones on the American Gem Society list, pearl, moonstone and alexandrite. Its birth flowers in the Old Farmer’s Almanac are the rose and the honeysuckle. The stones are a jewelers’ custom rather than astrology, though moonstone suits a Cancer birthday by name, since the Moon rules that sign.

What element is a June zodiac sign?

A June birthday is either air or water. Gemini, from June 1 to about the 20th, is a mutable air sign ruled by Mercury. Cancer, from about the 21st, is a cardinal water sign ruled by the Moon. The month runs from the last sign of the northern spring into the first sign of the northern summer.

Is the summer solstice always on June 21?

No. The June solstice falls between June 20 and 22, and Cancer’s first day moves with it. In UTC it came on the 20th in 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024, all leap years, and will again in 2028. UTC last saw a June 22 solstice in 1975. In Sydney, where it marks winter, the 22nd comes up in 54 of the 100 years from 1930 to 2029.
