How a past, present and future reading works
The three positions tell one story in order. The past card shows what led to this situation, the present card shows where you stand now, and the future card shows where things are heading if the current course continues. Read together, they turn a vague feeling into a sequence you can think about and act on.
The deck is the 78-card Rider-Waite-Smith tarot from 1909: 22 major arcana and 56 minor arcana in four suits. Each card can land upright or reversed, so every reading draws from 156 possible meanings in each position. You can find every card explained in the tarot card meanings.
How to ask a good question
A good question is open, about one situation, and about you. “What do I need to understand about my new job?” gives the cards room to answer. “Will he call tomorrow?” is better suited to a yes or no tarot reading. Some helpful ways to start a question:
- What do I need to know about…
- Where is my relationship with … heading?
- What is blocking me in…
- How can I move forward with…
If nothing specific is on your mind, you can draw with no question at all. The cards then speak about whatever is most alive for you right now.
Reading the three cards together
Each card has its own message, and the reading gets richer when you look at the three side by side. A few patterns carry most of the meaning:
- Major arcana mark the big themes of life. Two or three of them point to a significant chapter, while a reading of only minor cards is about everyday choices.
- A shared suit shows where the story lives. Wands are energy and action, Cups are feelings and relationships, Swords are thoughts and decisions, and Pentacles are work, money and the body.
- The direction from the past card to the future card shows whether things are lightening, getting heavier or staying open.
The summary under your reading looks at exactly these patterns, so you can see the shape of the whole story at a glance.
What reversed cards mean in this spread
A reversed card is not a bad card. It shows the same energy blocked, delayed or turned inward. A reversed card in the past often means something still unresolved. In the present, it points to where you feel stuck. In the future, it suggests a delay or an inner change that comes before the outer one. If you prefer readings without them, untick “Include reversed cards” before you draw.
An example reading
Say the question is “Why do I feel stuck at work?” and the cards are the Five of Cups in the past, the Four of Swords in the present and The Star in the future. The past shows a disappointment that was never fully grieved. The present asks for real rest instead of pushing through. The future points to renewed hope, arriving gradually once the rest has done its work. The advice is not to quit or to try harder, but to recover first.
What a tarot reading can and can't do
A tarot reading is a mirror for reflection, not a verdict. It can help you notice what you already sense, name a pattern and choose your next step more calmly. It can't make decisions for you or replace medical, legal or financial advice. If the future card worries you, treat it as a forecast you can change, then look at the present card for what to do now. Questions people ask
How often can I do a three-card reading?
As often as you like, but one reading per question works best. Drawing again and again on the same question usually means you are looking for a different answer rather than a clearer one. Give the first reading a day or two.
Are the cards really random?
Yes. When you tap a card, your browser picks one of the 78 cards with a secure random number, and each card can come up upright or reversed. Your question never leaves the page.
What if all three cards are reversed?
It usually means the situation is stuck, delayed or happening mostly inside you. It is a sign to slow down and look at what you are resisting, not a sign of bad luck.
Can a tarot reading predict the future?
No. The future card shows where things are heading if nothing changes, like a weather forecast for one situation. Your choices change the outcome, and that is the point of looking.
Do I need to know the card meanings?
No. Every card is read for its position, with a summary of the whole reading at the end. If you want to go deeper, each published card has its own page with love, work and yes or no meanings.
