What is a Moon sign?
A Moon sign is the sign of the zodiac the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. Astrologers read it as your emotional nature, the needs that have to be met before you feel settled. Your Sun sign is what you aim for. Your Moon sign is what you come home to, and your rising sign is how you come across.
In traditional astrology the Moon is at home in Cancer and strongest after that in Taurus, the sign of its exaltation. It is said to work harder in Capricorn and Scorpio, the signs opposite. That doesn’t make any Moon sign good or bad, it describes how easily feelings find their way out.
Do you need a birth time?
The Moon is the fastest body in the sky. It travels between 11.8° and 15.4° a day and spends about 2.3 days in each sign. Between 1960 and 2020 it changed sign on 44% of days, counted midnight to midnight in Universal Time. On the other 56% a birth date settles your Moon sign with no time at all.
This calculator checks your whole birthday in your birthplace’s time zone. If the Moon changed sign that day, you’ll see the time of the change and both possible signs, so you can compare them with what you know about your birth. A rough time like “before lunch” is often enough.
What each Moon sign needs
Each Moon sign has its own way of calming down. The table below sums up the need astrologers associate with each placement.
| Moon sign | What it needs to feel settled |
|---|---|
| Aries | Room to act on a feeling right away. Calms down by moving, not by talking. |
| Taurus | Comfort you can touch, steady routines and no sudden changes of plan. |
| Gemini | Words. A feeling settles once it has been talked or written through. |
| Cancer | Home, family or a chosen few who feel like family. |
| Leo | Warm attention and the sense of being appreciated for who they are. |
| Virgo | Order and usefulness. Feels better after fixing one small thing. |
| Libra | Harmony, fairness and someone to share the day with. |
| Scorpio | Deep trust and emotional honesty, with nothing done halfway. |
| Sagittarius | Freedom, open space and something to look forward to. |
| Capricorn | A plan and a sense of control. Handles feelings by getting on with things. |
| Aquarius | Independence, and friends who respect a need for space. |
| Pisces | Quiet, imagination and time alone to recover from other people’s moods. |

The Moon phase you were born under
Your birth Moon phase is the angle between the Moon and the Sun on the day you were born. The astrologer Dane Rudhyar split this angle into eight types of 45° each in his book The Lunation Cycle (1967), and many astrologers still use them as a second, quieter signature next to the Moon sign.
-
New Moon
Born up to 45° after the new moon. Described as instinctive and fresh, someone who starts things without a map and learns by doing.
-
Crescent
Born between 45° and 90°. Pushes away from the familiar to build something of their own, with effort that keeps going after the excitement fades.
-
First Quarter
Born between 90° and 135°. At home in decisions and pressure, clears obstacles and likes building structures that last.
-
Gibbous
Born between 135° and 180°. An improver who wants to know why, refines what exists and often stays a student for life.
-
Full Moon
Born between 180° and 225°. Lives through relationships and meaning, sees the other side of a question and can feel pulled two ways.
-
Disseminating
Born between 225° and 270°. A natural teacher or messenger who wants to pass on what they have learned.
-
Last Quarter
Born between 270° and 315°. Questions old forms and quietly turns away from what no longer fits, toward a principle of their own.
-
Balsamic
Born in the last 45° before the new moon. Intuitive and future-minded, with a sense of finishing something that others will build on.
How the calculation works
Positions come from the DE421 ephemeris of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory through the open-source Skyfield library. The Moon is placed as seen from the center of the Earth, in the tropical zodiac of Western astrology. Your birthplace sets the time zone, with past daylight saving rules from the IANA database, which matters because a date in New York and a date in Tokyo are different stretches of time.
To check a whole day, the Moon is placed at midnight and at 11:59 PM, and the moment it crossed into a new sign is found between the two. The Moon moves almost evenly over a single day, so that moment is accurate to within a few minutes.
Questions people ask
Can I find my Moon sign without my birth time?
Usually, yes. The Moon spends about two and a half days in each sign, so on more than half of all days it stays in one sign from midnight to midnight. If it changed sign on your birthday, the calculator shows the time of the change and both possible signs.
What does the Moon sign mean in astrology?
The Moon sign describes emotional needs. It shows what comforts you, how you react when you feel unsafe and what you need from the people closest to you. Astrologers read it next to the Sun sign, which describes your core drive.
Is the Moon sign more important than the Sun sign?
Not more important, but more private. The Sun sign is the part of you that is on show, while the Moon sign is what you’re like at home and under stress. People who know you well often recognize your Moon sign before your Sun sign.
What is the difference between my Moon sign and my birth Moon phase?
The Moon sign is where the Moon was in the zodiac. The birth Moon phase is how far the Moon was from the Sun, which decides how much of it was lit. Everyone has both, and this calculator shows the two together.
Why does another site give me a different Moon sign?
Most often the birth time or time zone differs, or the Moon changed sign on your birthday and the other site used noon. Vedic astrology also uses a different zodiac that sits about 24 degrees behind the Western one, which often moves the Moon back one sign.
