Love compatibility

Zodiac compatibility by sign and birthday

Zodiac compatibility is a comparison of two people’s signs by the angle between them on the zodiac wheel and by their elements. It shows where a couple flows easily and where it needs patience. Choose both Sun signs below, or add both birthdays to see feelings, attraction and life path numbers too.

How zodiac compatibility works

Zodiac compatibility starts with distance. The twelve signs sit around a circle, 30° apart, and the angle between two signs sets the tone of the pair. Four of these angles, the opposition, trine, square and sextile, were already described by Ptolemy in the second century. Every pair of signs falls into one of seven angles:

AngleIn a pair
Conjunction0°One sign for two. Easy understanding and shared blind spots
Semi-sextile30°Neighbors with little in common, closeness built through attention
Sextile60°Friendly and light, a pair that grows out of friendship
Square90°Friction between two ways of wanting things, and growth through it
Trine120°The easiest angle, two signs of one element
Quincunx150°Different logic at the root and constant fine-tuning
Opposition180°A strong pull between opposites who complete each other

Fire, earth, air and water

Every sign belongs to one of four elements. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are fire. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are earth. Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are air. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are water.

Signs of one element share a temperament, which is why a trine feels easy. Fire and air feed each other, and so do earth and water, so their sextile feels warm. Fire with water and earth with air usually meet at a square or a quincunx. There a couple has to translate one way of loving into another, and that work is where they grow.

Why birthdays show more than signs

A Sun sign is one twelfth of a chart. A birthday also gives the signs of the Moon, Venus and Mars on that day, plus numbers taken from the date itself. In a couple, each of them answers its own question:

  • Feelings. Each person’s Moon, how you feel and what calms you down.
  • Attraction. The Venus of one and the Mars of the other, where the pull comes from.
  • Life path numbers. Whether your pace of life matches.
  • Chinese zodiac. The animals of your birth years and how they get along.
  • Your pair’s arcana. One tarot arcana from both dates, such as The Lovers, as the shared theme of the relationship.

Add both birthdays above to see the first three as a short traffic light: easy, needs adjusting or needs effort. The full report explains each one and what helps. For your own chart in detail, start with your birth chart.

Couples who share a Sun sign

Two people with the same Sun sign share its strength and its weakness. Understanding comes quickly, and so do shared blind spots. Two Leos both want the stage, and two Virgos both correct the details. A pair like this holds when each partner takes turns being the steady one.

What compatibility can and can’t tell you

Compatibility describes the climate of a couple, not its fate. A square doesn’t mean a relationship won’t last, and a trine doesn’t promise that it will. Hard angles often make people grow, and easy ones can make them lazy. That is why you won’t see a percentage here. A number like 87% suggests a precision astrology doesn’t have. Two people decide, and the chart shows where to be patient.

Questions people ask

Which zodiac signs are most compatible?

Signs of the same element are usually the easiest pairs, because they meet at a trine: fire with fire, earth with earth, air with air and water with water. Fire with air and earth with water come next. An easy match isn’t the only good one, though, and many lasting couples meet at a square.

Is a square bad for a relationship?

No. A square means friction between two signs that want things in different ways. It asks for more talking and more patience, and couples who manage it often grow closer than easy matches do.

Do I need a birth time to check compatibility?

No. Signs and birthdays are enough. Without a birth time the Moon is taken at midday, and if it changed sign on that day, the result says so.

Why is there no compatibility percentage?

A percentage pretends to a precision that astrology doesn’t have. Seeing where a pair flows and where it takes effort is more useful than a score.

What is in the full compatibility report?
