How a yes or no tarot reading works
Every card in the 78-card deck leans one way. Bright cards like The Sun, The Star and the Ace of Cups lean toward yes. Heavy cards like the Three of Swords and The Tower lean toward no. Cards about waiting, choosing or missing information, like The Hanged Man and the Two of Swords, answer maybe.
The position matters too. Just as in a real shuffle, about half the cards come up reversed, or upside down. A reversed card usually softens its answer or turns it around. A bright card reversed often means not yet, and a heavy card reversed can mean the worst is already behind you.
Upright, 49 of the 78 cards lean toward yes, 13 toward no and 16 answer maybe. Reversed, the balance shifts to 22 yes, 41 no and 15 maybe. The deck is generous, but it doesn't say yes to everything, and that's what makes its answer worth hearing.
The answers are written in advance from the traditional meanings of the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. The card itself is drawn at random in your browser at the moment you pick it.
How to ask a yes or no question
The clearer the question, the clearer the answer. A few habits help.
- Ask about one thing. “Should I take this job?” works better than “Should I take this job or wait for the other one?”
- Ask about your own choices. “Should I reach out to them?” gets a clearer answer than “What are they thinking?” A card can speak to your next step, not to someone else's mind.
- Leave room for change. Tarot shows where things are heading now, not a fixed fate. “Is this a good time to move?” works better than “Will I ever move?”
- Ask once. Drawing again until you like the answer turns the reading into a coin toss. If the answer surprises you, give it a day.
Questions that work well: Is this the right time to change jobs? Should I sign up for the course? Will the move go smoothly? Am I ready to start dating again?

What a reversed card changes
A reversed card is the same card with its message slowed down, turned inward or blocked. In a yes or no reading it usually does one of three things.
- It softens a yes. The Sun reversed is still a yes, only quieter, or a little later than you hoped.
- It turns a yes into not yet. The Ace of Wands reversed is a no for now. The spark is there, but it hasn't caught.
- It lifts a no. The Ten of Swords reversed leans toward yes, because the hardest part is already over.
Some readers skip reversals altogether. If that's how you read, untick “Include reversed cards” under the spread, and every card will come up upright.
Questions people ask
Is yes or no tarot accurate?
Tarot can't see the future, and no card makes a decision for you. What a yes or no reading does well is show how a situation looks right now and give you a clear angle to think from. Treat the answer as a mirror, not a verdict.
Which tarot card is the strongest yes?
The Sun. It's the brightest card in the deck, and even reversed it stays a yes. The World, The Star and the Ten of Cups come close behind.
Which tarot card is the strongest no?
The Tower and the Ten of Swords give the clearest no. The Ten of Swords also shows dawn breaking on the horizon, a reminder that it marks the end of something painful, not the end of everything.
What does a maybe mean?
A maybe means the answer isn't settled yet. Something still depends on a choice, on timing or on information you don't have. Read what the card suggests doing next, and ask again once something has actually changed.
Can I ask the same question twice?
You can, but the first answer is the one worth listening to. Drawing again right away asks the cards to change their mind rather than to answer. Come back to the question when the situation has moved on.
Do you save my question?
No. The card is drawn right in your browser. Your question isn't sent to our server or stored anywhere.
