Mercury retrograde 2026 dates

All three of Mercury’s backward loops in 2026 fall in water signs, Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio, and none of them leaves its sign. Each lasts about three weeks. With the shadow before and after, Mercury spends about eight weeks working over the same stretch of the zodiac.

Times are in US Eastern Time. The shadow runs from the day Mercury first reaches the degree where it will turn direct to the day it gets back to the degree where it turned retrograde.

Mercury retrograde 2027 dates

Every loop of 2027 starts in a water sign and backs into the air sign before it. The February loop slips from Pisces into Aquarius on February 18, the June loop from Cancer into Gemini on June 26 and the October loop from Scorpio into Libra on October 16.

Mercury retrograde in Scorpio, October 24 to November 13, 2026

The October 2026 loop runs from about 21° back to 5° of Scorpio, the fixed water sign. In astrology Mercury rules talk, paperwork, travel plans and the way you think things through. Scorpio adds depth, privacy and money shared with others, so the tradition reads this loop as a time to revisit old conversations, joint finances and things left unsaid.

The pre-shadow began on October 4, when Mercury first reached 5° Scorpio, and the post-shadow ends around November 30, when it gets back to 21°. Halloween falls inside the backward run. On November 4 Mercury passes between Earth and the Sun, near the middle of the loop. In eastern Australia and New Zealand that falls on November 5, and the loop ends on November 14.

What is Mercury retrograde?

Mercury retrograde is the stretch of about three weeks when Mercury appears to move backward through the zodiac. The planet never reverses. Mercury circles the Sun in 88 days. As it swings around the near side of its orbit, it overtakes Earth on the inside track, so from here it seems to slide back against the stars.

The loop comes around every 116 days on average, the time Mercury takes to lap Earth, as predictable as the phases of the Moon. From 1930 to 2029 Mercury is retrograde 19.2% of the time, in loops of 19.8 to 24.2 days. Near the middle of each one it passes between Earth and the Sun, an event astronomers call inferior conjunction.

What the shadow period means

The Mercury retrograde shadow is the span around a retrograde when Mercury covers the same degrees three times. The pre-shadow starts when Mercury first reaches the degree where it will later turn direct. The post-shadow ends when it climbs back to the degree where it turned retrograde.

Across 1930 to 2029 the whole cycle, shadows included, lasts about 54 to 57 days. Astrologers read the pre-shadow as a preview, when the themes of the loop first show up, and the post-shadow as the weeks when they settle. The tables above give both ends for every loop of 2026, 2027 and 2028.

What to do during Mercury retrograde

Astrologers usually suggest using these weeks to review rather than launch. The tradition favors work that starts with re, such as revise, repair, reconnect and return.

Nothing in astronomy links Mercury’s apparent motion to failing phones or late flights, and the tradition itself is about attention, not doom. People sign leases, marry and start jobs during the 19% of the time Mercury seems to run backward, and the extra care it asks for is useful in any month.
