What is a rising sign?
The rising sign is the sign of the zodiac that sat on the eastern horizon when you were born, the point where the Sun, the Moon and the planets come up each day. In a birth chart this point is the Ascendant, and it marks the start of the first house. Every other house is counted from it.
Astrologers read the rising sign as your manner, the way you walk into a room and the impression people form before they know you. Your Sun sign is what you’re working toward, and your Moon sign is what you need to feel at home. Together the three are called the big three of a birth chart.
Why the rising sign needs a birth time
The Ascendant moves through all twelve signs in a little under 24 hours, about one degree every four minutes. Two people born on the same day in the same city can have different rising signs. A time rounded to the nearest hour can be enough to land in the wrong one.
The most reliable source is a long-form birth certificate, which in many places records the time. Hospital records, a baby book or a parent’s memory of the morning or evening come next. If all you have is a rough time, the day strip above shows which signs are possible.
How long each sign takes to rise
Rising signs don’t get two hours each. The zodiac crosses the horizon at a slant, so some signs come up in about an hour and others take close to three. The gap grows the farther you are from the equator. In New York, Aries rises in 1 h 11 min and Libra in 2 h 31 min. In London the difference is bigger still, 52 min against 2 h 50 min.
| Sign | New York 40.7° N | London 51.5° N | Sydney 33.9° S |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 1:11 | 0:52 | 2:23 |
| Taurus | 1:26 | 1:09 | 2:25 |
| Gemini | 1:54 | 1:46 | 2:19 |
| Cancer | 2:22 | 2:31 | 1:58 |
| Leo | 2:33 | 2:50 | 1:34 |
| Virgo | 2:31 | 2:50 | 1:20 |
| Libra | 2:31 | 2:50 | 1:20 |
| Scorpio | 2:33 | 2:50 | 1:34 |
| Sagittarius | 2:22 | 2:31 | 1:58 |
| Capricorn | 1:54 | 1:46 | 2:19 |
| Aquarius | 1:26 | 1:09 | 2:25 |
| Pisces | 1:11 | 0:52 | 2:23 |
Traditional astrology calls these signs of short and long ascension. North of the equator, Capricorn through Gemini rise quickly and Cancer through Sagittarius slowly, and south of the equator the pattern flips. If births were spread evenly over the day, Libra and Virgo rising would be about three times as common in London as Aries or Pisces rising. Those signs simply stay on the horizon longer.
What each rising sign is like
Each rising sign has a recognizable first impression, and its ruling planet becomes the ruler of the whole chart. Astrologers look at where that planet sits to see where your energy naturally goes.
| Rising sign | First impression | Chart ruler |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Quick, frank and ready to go. Often seen as braver than they feel. | Mars |
| Taurus | Calm, unhurried and solid. People relax around this steady presence. | Venus |
| Gemini | Chatty, curious and light on their feet. Easy to talk to, hard to pin down. | Mercury |
| Cancer | Warm and protective, with a guarded first layer. Strangers tend to open up. | Moon |
| Leo | Bright, generous and hard to miss. A room notices the arrival. | Sun |
| Virgo | Neat, observant and quietly capable. Seen as the one who has it handled. | Mercury |
| Libra | Graceful, polite and easy company. Smooths over awkward first meetings. | Venus |
| Scorpio | Private, intense and watchful. Gives little away and notices a lot. | Mars (modern Pluto) |
| Sagittarius | Open, funny and restless. Looks like someone already planning the next trip. | Jupiter |
| Capricorn | Composed, serious and older than their years. Trusted early with responsibility. | Saturn |
| Aquarius | Friendly but a little detached, with an unusual angle on most things. | Saturn (modern Uranus) |
| Pisces | Soft, dreamy and adaptable. Seems to soak up the mood of the room. | Jupiter (modern Neptune) |
How this calculator works
Planet positions come from the DE421 ephemeris of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, computed with the open-source Skyfield library. The Ascendant is worked out from sidereal time at your birthplace and the tilt of the Earth’s axis on your birth date. Your local time is converted to Universal Time with the IANA time zone database. It knows past daylight saving rules, so a summer birth in 1975 gets the offset that applied that summer.
The day strip is calculated in your browser with the same formula, minute by minute from midnight to midnight in your birthplace. It agrees with the main result to within a minute. The zodiac is the tropical one used in Western astrology, counted from the March equinox.
Questions people ask
Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?
Not exactly. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so a date alone leaves several options. This calculator lists every sign that rose on your birthday with its start and end time, and a rough time like early morning usually narrows it to one or two.
Is the rising sign the same as the Ascendant?
Yes. Rising sign and Ascendant are two names for the zodiac sign on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. Astrologers also give the exact degree, such as Leo 14°, which marks the start of the first house.
Why do different websites give me different rising signs?
Usually the birth time or the time zone differs. The Ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes, so a time rounded to the hour, a missed daylight saving change or the wrong birthplace can move it into the next sign. Check the place and time against your birth record.
Does your rising sign change as you get older?
No. Your natal rising sign is fixed by the moment you were born. Some astrologers also follow a progressed Ascendant, a symbolic chart that moves forward slowly through life, but the rising sign in your birth chart stays the same.
Which matters more, the Sun sign or the rising sign?
Neither replaces the other. The Sun sign describes your core drive, while the rising sign describes how you meet the world and how people first see you. Many astrologers read the rising sign first, because it sets the twelve houses of the whole chart.
What is my progressed rising sign?
Your progressed rising sign is where your Ascendant has moved in a progressed chart, which advances the birth chart by one day for each year of life. It moves about a degree a year on average, faster in some signs than in others, so it changes sign a few times in a lifetime. This calculator finds the rising sign you were born with.
